We wanted to give some tips to our dear sewers who use our magnifier lamps. So we got together with Wendi Gratz from Shiny Happy World who has an excellent sewing blog to give us some tips on how to start your sewing hobby.
1. How many years have you been sewing?
I sewed by hand when I was a kid. Badly. I bought my first sewing machine when I was in college and I taught myself to sew by reading books. (It was before the internet.) So I’ve been sewing for about 30 years.
2. What’s your favorite sewing pattern/technique?
It depends on my mood. If I want to sit at my machine I love to make quilts. I developed a method for Quilt As You Go combined with applique with a fusible adhesive that’s really fun and makes it easy to be playful with my projects. But I also love hand stitching – especially Big Stitch quilting and embroidery on wool felt.
3. What is your favorite project that you’ve ever done?
Probably my Bears in the Hills embroidered felt applique.
4. Which project are you most proud of?
My Mix & Match Monsters quilt pattern. It was really challenging to design all those pieces in shapes and sizes where they could be used in a bunch of different ways. So many people have used these pieces to create monsters I never even imagined – it’s wonderful to see.
5. What is the greatest tip that you could give a beginner to learn sewing?
Relax and have fun! The more you sew, the better you’ll get. Enjoy the process!
6. What is the hardest thing about sewing?
I don’t have enough hours in the day. 🙂
