This week we spoke with Angie Bennett from Greenstyle Creations who has been sewing for 43 years! Can you imagine? Angie started sewing at a very young age and learned how to sew activewear clothing until she got so good that she opened her own athletic clothing site. You would think that most sewing bloggers make cute sweaters, toys, and other tchotchkes but not Angie. She makes these incredible sweaters, sports bras, and tights of all colors and patterns.

Check out her story in the interview below. (oh and don’t forget to leave her any questions or comments 😊)

How Angie went from sewing patterns to opening an activewear clothing shop

1. How many years have you been sewing?

I have been sewing for about 43 years, my mom taught me how to hem tea towels while I was really young. She has a sweet vintage Bernina sewing machine that created the most beautiful stitches and I loved watching the needle move as it joined the pieces to create something unique and new. A few years later, I started sewing my own clothes and found a whole new creative and productive hobby!

2. What’s your favorite sewing pattern/technique?

I started designing my own sewing patterns about 7 years ago. I found that PDF patterns were a perfect way for me to easily get my designs to other people looking for a stylish pattern. I have a variety of sewing patterns on my website but most of all, I love sewing athletic/activewear clothing and leisurewear.

3. What is your favorite project that you’ve ever done?

I can’t really come up with just one… or two…. or even three. I suppose it is usually whatever pattern I am working on at the time. Right now, I am working on a crop tank and a cross back overlay. I am kinda obsessed with the overlay. It is so elegant and sporty at the same time.

4. Which project are you most proud of?

Several years ago, my husband and I owned a sailboat and went sailing as often as possible. We made several friends out at the clubhouse and after they found out I could sew, they asked me to sew a sailboat cover to replace the worn out one they were using. It was quite a big job but I was really proud that it fit so well. I wouldn’t do it again though! 🙂

5. What is the greatest tip that you could give a beginner to learn sewing?

Take it easy and slow at first and don’t get discouraged. PDF sewing patterns are a great place to start since the directions are a little easier to follow and most PDF pattern companies have a FB group that is full of people who are happy to help and answer any questions.

6. What is the hardest thing about sewing?

I think for a lot of us it is finding enough time to so all the sewing we want to. I also have a full-time job as a hydraulics engineer so I know for me, I feel pretty lucky to get in a few hours per week. I would love to have a few hours per day but I’ll take what I can get for now.
