Not a lot of people are brave enough to completely redo their entire living room. Only a few brave souls try it and succeed. We wanted to find out how this is done and what exactly makes one qualified to try this at home (pun intended). That’s why we interviewed Shawna Liao from Willow Bloom Home Blog to tell us all about it. Be sure to check out the amazing pictures she took and leave her any comments or questions below.

How I Redid Our Entire Living Room (DIY-Style):

1. How many years have you been blogging?

I have been on Instagram for almost three years now but just launched my blog in January of this year. Instagram definitely provided a great platform to start exploring my decor style and working with brands.

2. What is your favorite Interior Design project that you’ve ever done?

This is a hard question because I’m pretty attached to each project. However, I think our living room/dining room renovation is my favorite because it was something I had envisioned for so long and now we get to live in it every day. It was a labor of love that included painting my piano, installing board and batten, and reupholstering a vintage sofa that belonged to my grandparents.

See more pics of these amazing projects here – how to install a faux board and how I painted my piano.

3. Which project are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of our Master bedroom renovation because it was my first big project in our home and I jumped in even though I didn’t exactly how I would accomplish what I envisioned. I learned along the way and didn’t get discouraged.

4. What does a day in the life of an interior decor blogger look like?

It’s likely different for everyone, but as an interior decor blogger with 3 young boys, I set aside small blocks of time each day to work on product styling and photography. Evenings (after the kids are in bed) are spent planning and writing.

5. What kind of lighting do you have set up for your work?

For my photography, I utilize natural lighting and ambient lighting. Having a good camera definitely helps too! When working at my desk I use a floor lamp that can be directed and overhead lighting.

6. What is your favorite lamp or string lights that you’ve used for a project?

I love my string lights from Brightech. They add just the right amount of light to enjoy evenings in our garden.

7. What is the greatest tip that you could give to our readers?

That’s easy – don’t put off decorating because you think decision making is too hard or there’s not enough time. Get some expert help or start a Pinterest board and get your ideas off the ground. You’ll never regret adding beauty and character to your home.

8. What is the hardest thing about interior design?

Hmmm, I have so much fun with interior design. I’d say it’s time management- finding the time to do everything I want to do is challenging. There’s so much involved, from planning spaces to styling and photography, to photo editing, writing, and marketing.

9. If you had to do it all over again, what would you do differently?

I think I would have gone down the interior decor pathway earlier in life. I wanted to be an interior decorator since I was about 10 years old but ended up getting a Master’s degree in Science and working 15 years in that field before I found my way back to decor. I’m so happy I did.

10. What do you think had the biggest impact on making your blog a success?

It was starting my blog at just the right time in my life and getting the technical support I needed. I also think that a blog can only be successful in the long term if you’re writing about something you’re truly passionate about, and that’s how I feel about decor.
